Northwick Grange Care Home Appoints New Manager

A POPULAR city care home has appointed a new manager, set to bring fresh ideas to help residents living with dementia.

Care specialist Jackie Houghton has taken over the helm at Northwick Grange Care Home, with a pledge to make the home a more dementia-friendly environment.

The senior care expert who has over 17 years’ experience in caring for elderly people, is leading on plans to build a new dementia garden at the Old Northwick Lane home. It will feature a variety of colours, plants and herbs which are proven to trigger the senses and memories.

Mrs Houghton said: “I am really thrilled to be leading the team here at Northwick Grange and am already working with our fantastic team to introduce new ideas and most of all, ensuring the quality of our care, and our communications with families, is second to none.

“Dementia is an issue very close to my heart. One of my key objectives is to make sure our residents who suffer from the disease can spend more time outside enjoying the sights, sounds and smells.

“They can stimulate powerful memories and so our planned dementia garden will be really vital

“Northwick Grange is a much-loved care home which is renowned for taking care of elderly people’s needs.”

Chandos Lodge care home completes Adventure with Dementia scheme

STAFF at a Hagley care home are celebrating after receiving a prestigious award which recognises their commitment to supporting people with dementia.

After taking part in a six-month ‘See Me’ training programme, which is based on stimulation, engagement, environment and education, Chandos Lodge Residential Home was presented with a bronze award by Adventure with Dementia.

Staff were taught how to make closer links with their community, enhance mealtimes, stimulate through music and support residents in their every day lives.

Ann Norris, manager at Chandos Lodge, said: “This is a big achievement for us as it shows we’re taking the right steps in helping our residents who are living with dementia.

“We had to go through a really tough process and will continue to be rated every six months to ensure everything remains in place.

“More than anything, the programme has allowed us to bring in positive changes.

“They have helped ensure we maintain a homely feel and a place where residents can gain experiences which stimulate memories, such as exploring our sensory garden where they can enjoy sights, smells and sounds.

“We are also making mealtimes a much more enjoyable occasion so memories can once again be stimulated through taste and smells. It gives us a brilliant framework to stick to.”

Rachel Kenyon, co-founder of Adventure with Dementia Worcestershire, said: “Throughout the programme we were so impressed with Ann and her team.

“They want to be the best they possibly can be in terms of dementia care and that dedication really shone through. We’re looking forward to visiting Chandos Lodge again early next year to see the progress being made.”

Arden Park Care Home receives skin award for second year

Arden Park Care Home has received a prized accreditation for the second year running for its work in preventing painful pressure ulcers and looking after residents’ skin.

Armscott Road-based Arden Park Care Home has again been awarded the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Tissue Viability Accreditation.

It means staff at the 31-resident care home can continue to relieve and prevent pressure ulcers and advise residents’ families on the measures to take.

A key part of Arden Park’s success has been down to care staff completing daily skin checks, the introduction of skin integrity care plans, and advice on nutritional diets.

Arden Park manager Debbie Hambridge said: “We are over the moon that for the second year in-a-row we have received this important accreditation. It’s testament to our team for maintaining their high standards.

“The training and daily checks means our staff are fully aware of the risks of pressure ulcers and how quickly skin conditions can change. It is all about preventing them occurring and reducing the risks to our residents, so they can enjoy life without discomfort.

“To be recognised for our efforts is fantastic and is a wonderful way to end the year.”

Staff at the home will be presented with a letter of commendation by Councillor Faye Abbotts at a special ceremony to be held at Coventry City Council in a few weeks’ time.

Specialists from University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Tissue Viability Accreditation department can visit care homes up to three times each year to conduct an annual assessment and ensure compliance with standards are being met.

Kenilworth & District Poppy Appeal launched at Kenilworth Manor

Following last year’s launch at the cenotaph, the appeal’s opening event for 2017 was hosted by Joy Thorpe and the team at Kenilworth Manor Care Home in Thickthorn Orchards on Friday October 27.

One of Poppy Appeal’s longest serving volunteers, Margaret Kite BEM, also presented Kenilworth’s mayor, Cllr Kate Dickson, with her poppy for this year at the event. Joy Thorpe said: “Everyone here at the care home was honoured to help launch this vital annual appeal and delighted that the Mayor and Margaret could be present.   “We hope to raise lots of money to support veterans, the families who care for them and of course our many serving men and women currently in the armed forces. “We spent some time reminiscing about the Second World War during Cllr Dickson’s visit. It was a defining period in the lives of many of our residents and they were very keen to make sure they played a part in ensuring those whose sacrifices meant they did not get to live to old age would never be forgotten.”

Last year’s appeal raised £24,000, and it is hoped even more can be raised this year. More than 100 businesses, schools and clubs will be supporting the appeal by selling poppies. They will stay on sale until Remembrance Sunday which falls on November 12. Cllr Dickson added: “I was really pleased to support the poppy appeal this year, and it was fitting to be with older people whose families have been affected by the previous World Wars. “We hope the appeal raises lots of money for such a great cause.” Anyone wishing to donate or to enquire about help from the Royal British Legion, Kenilworth Poppy Appeal can be contacted on 07964 704941.
